It is the policy of the MSP that all students actively studying in the program should be provided with financial support in the form of a Fellowship or Graduate Research Associate (GRA). Fellowship support will be provided by either the MSP or the graduate program in which the student is registered (Integrated Biomedical Science Graduate Program or Biomedical Engineering). Either the graduate program or the student’s research advisor will provide GRA support. Admission to the MSP is dependent upon availability of financial support for the student during the medical school years. In keeping with NIH guidelines for support of Medical Scientist Training Programs, the MSP will provide financial assistance from program funds only to those applicants who are U.S. citizens or registered aliens.
Fellowships
All Medical Scientist Program (MSP) students will receive a fellowship that will cover the tuition and general fee as well as provide the student a $23,600 stipend per annum to assist with living expenses. This funding will continue with the student throughout the completion of the program contingent upon satisfactory academic performance. MSP students are held to a higher level of performance than a passing grade required by the medical school. Currently, this requires that students receive an overall average of 75% in their Integrated Studies coursework.
While an MSP student is granted this funding from the program upon admission, students are required to apply for the highly competitive and prestigious University fellowships. Many MSP students have received these highly selective awards from the University. Information on how to apply for these highly selective fellowships can be found on the admissions page.
Student Loans
For additional funding, students can also apply for Federal student loans through the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program. To do so, students MUST file the free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The priority deadline for the FAFSA is March 1st and takes approximately 4-6 weeks to process. The FAFSA is available on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
While enrolled in graduate school only coursework, the maximum amount of federal loan funding offered to a student will be the lesser of $20,500 or the student’s cost of attendance minus all fellowship funding.
While enrolled in graduate school and medical school coursework or only in medical school coursework, the maximum amount of federal loan funding offered to a student will be the lesser of $40,500 or the student’s cost of attendance minus all fellowship funding.
Please note that the stipend portion of the fellowship is not considered when determining a student’s eligibility for loan funding.
Estimated Cost of Attendance
As mentioned above the cost of tuition and general fee for an MSP student are covered in full. Therefore, the student is responsible to cover all remaining academic expenses as well as their living expenses. For the 2007-2008 school year, MSP students were responsible for paying for the following academic expenses each quarter:
Health Insurance fee – this fee will vary based on the type of coverage selected. If a student has their own private health insurance, they would not incur this fee.
Cota Bus Fee - $9
Student Activity Fee - $15
Recreation Fee - $81
Students who will be commuting to campus for classes will also need to purchase a parking permit.
Students are also responsible for paying for their own living expenses. However the stipend funding provided to the student should cover much/all of the academic and living expenses. As such, the College of Medicine suggests that students limit these expenses to $5200 to $5500 per quarter. If a student has academic and living expenses that exceed this range, the student will need to either reduce their expenses or take out federal loans to cover the additional expenses. If you would like assistance in determining your need for loan funding, the Office of Student Financial Services can assist you.

Medical School Fellowships
All MSP students will receive MSP fellowships for all four years that they are full time students in the OSU Doctor of Medicine program. Currently, these will carry a stipend of $22,000 per annum and provide full tuition and fee support that will be provided by the College of Medicine. The MSP fellowship is renewed annually, but renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance. MSP students are held to a higher level of performance than a passing grade required by the medical school. Thus, annual renewal of the MSP Fellowship requires that students receive in the previous year of medical school an overall GPA at least 5% higher than the passing grade.
ISP - an overall average for each year of 75% |
Student Loans/Need-Based Scholarships
While Enrolled In The College Of Medicine
For additional funding, some students also qualify for Federal Student Loans through the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program.
To qualify, students MUST file the free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The priority deadline for the FAFSA is
March 1st and takes approximately 4-6 weeks to process. The FAFSA is available on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
If the student files the FAFSA prior to March 1st and includes parent information, they will be considered for
NEED-BASED scholarships through the Office of Student Financial Aid in the College of Medicine for those quarters in which
they are enrolled as a medical student. (Eligibility is determined each year, however, the student must have filed by the deadline
and include parent information to be considered for need-based scholarship funds.)
If the student wishes to be considered for loans ONLY, parent information is NOT required, and the student can file anytime
within the financial aid year (June 30 – July 1 per annum).
The Federal Borrowing limit per annum is $38,500 OR Student Budget minus all additional financial aid (tuition waiver,
scholarships, etc. Stipends ARE NOT CONSIDERED FINANCIAL AID due to their taxable status). |

University Fellowships
University fellowships are awarded to outstanding academic students and fund in part the pre-general and post-general exam
years depending upon the specific fellowship. Students must be nominated by a graduate program (Integrated Biomedical
Science Graduate Program or Biomedical Engineering) for these fellowships, and the program will process the student’s
application. To be considered for a University Fellowship, students must have all application materials received by the
recruitment committee of the graduate program no later than January 10th. However, students are strongly encouraged to
submit the completed application during the autumn quarter before admission. The student must also check the appropriate
“Fellowship” box under FINANCIAL AID on the bottom, right-hand side of the first page of the graduate application form. The
graduate program that the student enters will supplement University Fellowship awards up to an amount at least equal to the
minimum standard stipend for that program. Periods of training in the program not funded by a University Fellowship will be
funded by GRAs or fellowships provided by the graduate program or faculty research advisor as described above. |
